We’ve all probably had a pen pal at some point in our lives. I had one in 3rd grade. I went to Douglas Elementary, she went to Willard…so we probably lived 5 minutes away from each other. I think her name was Miranda…or was in Melinda? Anyway, I made the cake below for my customer, Jo, who has had her Pen Pal for 62 years! Yes, I said 62 years! That’s pretty incredible, if you ask me. Jo and Barbara were just 11 years old when they started corresponding in 1951. Barbara has lived in England her whole life and Jo has lived in the states, Iowa and Oregon. Barbara was here for a visit and Jo wanted to throw a party for her and give her a special cake. So I came up with the idea of covering the cake in lots and lots of “envelopes” addressed to both Jo and Barbara. (Can you imagine how many letters have actually been written over all these years?!!) I used a 3 cent stamp…because that is what postage cost in 1951! Under the US and British flag, is a pond. You know…the “pond” as we like to call it. I had a lot of fun with this cake…and it was even more fun knowing the story behind it. Here’s to Jo and Barbara, life long pen pals!
Happy 7th Birthday, Maci!!
